Go for a self hosted blog: ever heard of blogger.com, wordpress.com or wix.com?. These are popular platforms for blogging. It is important to note two flip sides to blogging. First, free blogging platform and second self hosted blogging platform. A free blogging platform is a a platform where you set up your blog without paying for web hosting and a domain name. It is usually free and has an extra name attached before the usual .com. For instance on blogger platform, if you decide to get a free blog you may end up with a URL (Uniform Resource Locator); just another name for web address, like fancyhomes.blogspot.com or if you are on the WordPress free platform, it should be fancyhomes.wordpress.com. On the other hand, getting a self hosted blog is the right action to take. A self hosted blog is the total opposite of a free blog, in this case you pay for web hosting and domain registration. There are many reasons that makes a self hosted blog stand out.
You are in total control of your blog. You can post anything without being barred or made to follow strict policies. Most free blogging platforms can wake up any day and decide to shut down a blog for reasons best known to them.
A self hosted blog can maintain as much traffic as required; well depending on the amount of disk space you paid for while hosting your blog. When it comes to a free blog, it gets really messy when your traffic hits the roof.
When it comes to free hosted blogs, you are restricted to the available themes and tweaks. But a self hosted blog allows you to tweak and change everything to your taste.
When choosing a platform for a self hosted blog, you need to keep an eye out for their available features like cpanel control, their 24/7 support and their uptime. A bad web hosting service can spell doom for your blog. And you may ask what’s web hosting and domain registration.
Domain name: Your domain name represents you, your blog, your business and your brand. Make it recognizable, easy to remember and a proud representation of you and your blog. Examples of strong domain names are: amazon.com, apple.com and change.org. Simply the address of your blog. For a better understanding a domain name is like the address of your house or place of work.
Web hosting: After choosing a domain name, selecting reliable hosting services will be one of the most important decisions you make. To a great extent, the functionality and performance of your blog will depend on your hosting provider. Web hosting provides you with space on a server to store your blog files. It’s similar to your personal computer files at home, except your blog files are available online where visitors can access them at all times by entering your domain name or by discovering your blog in a search engine.
Quality content is king: by the time you must have been done with either choosing a free blogging platform or self hosted blog, the next thing to consider is content. The lifespan of your blog depends on the content you put on it. Now there are lot of ways to get content, sources like what’s trending, the news, social media, friends and even keyword tools. Do not for any reason copy some other blog’s content and put it up on yours, it is called Plagiarism and it is very much punishable by search engines that will go a long way from removing your blog’s index from their database. Just be original its ok to brainstorm and look at other blogs in your niche to know how to position things. A good content on your blog will actually make you rank on the second page of Google’s search engine till you optimize your way to the first page.
Free traffic is actually costly: in the world of blogging, nothing good comes easy, first you will need free traffic in the beginning and the best place to get it from is social media. Facebook pages, twitter and tumblr will give you the best free traffic. But it comes at a price, you will need to open a Facebook page for your blog, share your content and sometimes pay a little token to gain traffic in the form of adverts. Even if you decide to share on your private timeline, you will still need friends to share, so sharing on social media is the best form of free traffic but it isn’t actually free.
Blogging is fun, it all depends on what your passion is because it is your passion that will keep your blog flying in high spirits.
Avoid plagiarism. Its ok to get your hands burnt while learning as tomorrow you’ll be in the position to teach others.
